What a till and a shift are
A till is one checkout device, such as a tablet, or a PC with a cash drawer. It belongs to one store location, so stock sold on it comes off that location. Its short code, such as R01, is printed on every receipt.
A shift is one session of selling on a till, from the moment you count the float into the drawer to the moment you count the drawer at the end. Every sale and return belongs to a shift, and the shift gives you the cash-up (the Z report) when you close it.
Add a till (managers)
- In the back office, go to Point of sale → Tills.
- Click New till.
- Type a Code. Keep it short, such as R01. It can use letters, digits and hyphens, up to 10 characters.
- Type a Name, for example Front till.
- Choose the Location this till belongs to.
- Choose a Price list, or leave it on Default to use the company's default price list.
- Optionally type Usual cash at the start: the cash you leave in the drawer for the next day. Leave it empty if you take all the cash out at night; the next shift then starts from the cash counted at the last close.
- Click Add till.
To stop a till being used, click Deactivate on its row. It no longer appears in the list on the till. Click Activate to bring it back.
Choose the till for this device
If the company has one till, the device takes it by itself and goes straight to Open a shift: there is nothing to choose.
With two or more tills, the first time you open the till on a device it asks which till the device is. The device remembers your choice, so you do this only once.
Setting up a till device? Install Sevo on it like an app first: tap ☰ then Install app. It opens full screen from its own icon and keeps working offline. See "Install Sevo on your tablet, phone or computer".
- In the back office, go to Point of sale → Open the till. The till opens.
- With more than one till: under Choose the till for this device, pick it from the Till list.
If there is no till yet, the message tells you to add one under Point of sale → Tills first.
Open a shift
The top bar now shows the till, the shift number (for example Shift #12), the price list and its currency, and how many items are loaded on the device.
If this device should be a different till, tap Use a different till before you open the shift (it is there only when the company has more than one till). The Back office button takes you to the back office without opening a shift.
- The screen says Open a shift on R01 (with your till's code).
- Count the cash in the drawer.
- Cash in the drawer now is already filled in: with the usual cash for this till if the shop set one, otherwise with the cash counted when the till was last closed. The line under it says which. If your count is different, type your figure. Type 0 if the drawer is empty.
- Tap Open shift. The selling screen opens.
Opening a shift without internet
If the device is offline, the button reads Open shift offline. The shift opens on the device straight away with the next shift number the device knows, and it is sent to the server when the connection returns. Sales you make in the meantime are queued too.
